Kutná Hora is a city located in the Czech Bohemia region, about 80 km away from Prague, which is great for a 1 day trip. Together with Sedlec (a suburb), Kutná Hora is a UNESCO world heritage site and is known among other things by its bone decorated church. We went there with J.'s brother last spring and we had a lovely day.

Igreja de Todos os Santos / Church of All Saints

Looks like a nice normal Roman Catholic church, right? Well, here is what you can find underneath.

O Ossário de Sedlec / The Sedlec Ossuary

The ossuary contains bones of skeletons from 40.000 to 70.000 people and are a few centuries old, many of them being buried during the black death in the XV century. In 1870, there was the idea of organising the bones somehow and the result was this bizarre monument, nowadays visited by over 200.000 people per year.

The other side of the Church with its beautiful gardens.

The Ossuary might freak out some people, but it is still worth it to visit Kutná Hora. Especially if there is a beautiful blue sky and the sun is shining, like in the day we visited it.

  2. Very interesting, indeed. I think the bones came from the plague, but it does remind us of what we are made of.
